Empowering researchers and institutions across Europe
The European Research Council (ERC) is part of the Horizon Europe programme and funds ground-breaking research led by outstanding Principal Investigators (PIs). The ERC supports investigator-driven frontier research across all fields of science, engineering, and scholarship. With a strong emphasis on scientific excellence, ERC grants are among the most prestigious and competitive in Europe, offering substantial funding to researchers at all career stages.
ERC’s grant schemes are designed to enable recipients to leap ahead in their research careers and deliver transformative scientific and societal impact. Grants are available for individuals or teams headed by a single PI (Starting, Consolidator, Advanced), two to four PIs and their teams (Synergy), and to translate research to innovation (Proof of Concept).

Competitive Schmes
ERC offers some of the most prestigious and competitive funding opportunities that give European researchers the freedom and resources to pursue groundbreaking ideas.
* Scientific Leadership: The PI sets their own agenda and leads an independent team.
* Research Freedom: Bottom-up approach-any field, no pre-set topics.
* International Recognition: Peer-reviewed selection focused on world-class excellence.
* Flexible Funding: Full cost coverage, cross-national teams, and generous resources for ambitious plans.
* Open to All Nationalities: Host must be in an EU Member State or Associated Country, but applicants themselves may come from anywhere.
* Path to Impact: Proof of Concept grants provide unique support to turn results into innovations.

Who Can Apply?
ERC funding is open to researchers from all fields and career stages. It’s all about excellence – giving both individuals and teams the chance to take bold ideas further and break new ground.
* Researchers at any career stage: Whether at the early independence phase (Starting), consolidating reputation (Consolidator) or leading in their field (Advanced or Synergy).
* Host institution requirement: The project must be hosted by a public or private organisation in an EU Member State or Associated Country (university, research centre, company, etc.).
* Team Composition: PI may recruit team members from around the world; in some cases, team members can be based outside Europe.
* Excellence as sole criterion: Project novelty, ambition, and the PI's track record are what matter-not the field, age or prior to EU grants.
