Project Types and Funding Frameworks
Grand Solutions supports both research projects and development projects. These can be national or international collaborations, but projects must always be ambitious, knowledge-based, have a high degree of innovation and show value creation for Denmark.
Project Types
Industrial Research: Projects aimed at creating new knowledge and competencies that form the basis for future solutions. Examples include laboratory research in new materials, development of quantum chips, or advanced prototypes for testing in controlled environments.
Experimental Development: Projects that apply and build on existing knowledge and testing it under realistic conditions. Examples include demonstration of new energy systems, testing digital health solutions in practice, pilot projects with circular production methods.
Funding Forms and Framework
Grant size: Projects can apply for between DKK 5–40 million. Project duration must be between 1 and 5 years.
Funding rate: Innovation Fund Denmark can cover up to 75% of the project budget. For quantum and space technology projects, support can amount to up to 90%.
State aid rules: Support is provided according to EU state aid rules: either under GBER (General Block Exemption Regulation) or as de minimis support for smaller grants. Example: an SME may receive 75% support for industrial research, while a large company can get 65%.
Co-financing requirement: All project participants must contribute proportional to the value they gain from the project.
International and national collaborations: Consortia can be formed across countries, but the main applicant must be Danish. Projects must have at least two participants from two different entities, except for quantum-based projects where two departments from the same university are considered a consortium.
