More environmentally friendly and cost-reducing innovation in seismic operations
Since 1981, Ulmatec Baro has been developing expertise in the development and production of equipment for seismic operations. A seismic operation is demanding in many ways, and a typical operation today requires a tow with acoustic receivers that can stretch up to 12 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide. Ulmatec Baro has developed a more compact, environmentally friendly, and cost-reducing solution for a new type of towing system that also allows the deflectors to operate in a submerged position.
New system for seismic operations
Support from SkatteFUNN enables Ulmatec to carry out its project, which aims to develop a new type of submersible deflector system and operationalize testing of this system. The support has also contributed to solving various R&D challenges, such as developing a control system that can help stabilize the equipment in harsh ocean currents and waves.
Ulmatec is introducing new solutions that have not been available on the market before, achieving optimal results and potentially reducing the number of tow cables, requiring less towing force, and improving the quality of data acquisition. The characteristics of this system are unique, and the technology has significant market potential.
Solutions that relieve the environment and reduce costs
Ulmatec's solutions make it possible to use smaller vessels (VOO) and facilitate the reuse of seismic equipment. This, in turn, significantly reduces operation time and fuel consumption. Additionally, operating costs could be reduced by 2-4%.
Customized seismic vessels can cost up to a billion Norwegian kroner, but due to the substantial reduction in energy needs and consumption, Ulmatec's system could offer new solutions at a much lower cost for customers. The work can be optimized in many ways, and the customer can also avoid costs if the tow were to deviate from its course.
Nordic Innovators is pleased to have been able to assist Ulmatec Baro in carrying out its project and putting Norwegian innovation on the world map.
