The Next Generation for Offshore Wind Turbine Reliability is AI Monitoring
In 2023, the project “BeWind Development of New Algorithms and Methods for a Condition Monitoring System for the Next Generation of Offshore Wind Turbine Main Bearings” received DKK 12.2 million in funding from the Grand Solutions programme.
Offshore wind turbines face harsh conditions which significantly increase operational and maintenance costs, with the main bearing often responsible for many failures. As turbine sizes grow, traditional monitoring methods struggle to adapt. To address this, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) and Aalborg University (AAU) collaborated to develop advanced condition monitoring algorithms for new main bearing technologies. Using machine learning and anomaly detection models, the system will be tested in a prototype, enhancing turbine reliability, reducing maintenance costs, and supporting a more sustainable and efficient wind energy industry. The project duration is expected to be 2024-2027.
