New Opportunities in the Fish Industry

Nordic Innovators was in charge of the SME Phase 2 application (Horizon 2020) and secured Seafarm Development (SFD) a grant of around € 1.75 million. With the funding, SFD brings to the market a solution that effectively reduces sea lice infestation by 90% and reduces the operating costs of fish farmers by a min. of 20%.

SFD's solution combats sea lice infestations in the marine farming industry by the Seafarm Pulse Guard system - a net with attached cables sending electrical impulses into the water. The wave of electrical pulses deactivates the lice in its early stages drifting into the farm cage before they attach to the fish. This provides a preventive, chemical-free and environmentally friendly solution to one of the big challenges in this industry. 

With successful completion of the project, SFD will be the only preventive method in the market to reduce infection spreading in the marine ecosystem. This creates new opportunities for farmers to access and expand into new areas. By year 2023, SFD estimates to have reached an accumulated revenue of € 84,3 million and completed the development of Seafarm Pulse Guard subsystem technology and prototypes.
