Advancing Earth Observation Services to Protect Our Oceans
Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) has secured its first European Commission Horizon Europe-funded project, marking a significant milestone in the company's commitment to environmental monitoring and maritime sustainability.
The project, titled “POSEIDON (Pollution Observation from Space: Environmental Imagery for Detections in the Oceans & Nearshore)”, is a three-year initiative funded with €5 million under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme. Bringing together 10 partners from Europe, Asia, and North America, the project aims to enhance the detection and monitoring of maritime pollution through advanced Earth observation technologies.
POSEIDON - A Cross-Sector Partnership for Enhanced Maritime Environmental Monitoring
The partnership of the POSEIDON project combines capabilities from private industry, research institutions, and public-sector organisations to address a shared global challenge, leveraging a combination of optical and radar satellite technologies to improve the identification and monitoring of maritime pollutants.
POSEIDON will develop enhanced services capable of identifying oil spills at sea, detecting oil spills in sea-ice conditions and monitoring chemicals, sewage, garbage, and emissions released by vessels, while also supporting authorities and stakeholders responsible for maritime environmental protection to deliver an improved situational awareness in increasingly congested maritime regions
By integrating expertise in Earth observation, satellite communications, in-situ measurements, and maritime surveillance, the consortium aims to create practical solutions that can be adopted by both public stakeholders and future commercial users.
Our Collaboration Was Key to Success
We closely assisted KSAT throughout the entire application process; ensuring the project alignment to the targeted call as well as proposal development - “The experience of the people on handling such proposals was of high level.” (Georgia Karadimou, Senior Project Manager.)
With funding secured through Horizon Europe, the POSEIDON consortium is now positioned to develop next-generation monitoring services that will help stakeholders better understand and manage the increasing environmental pressures facing the world's oceans.
